Magnolia Mother

Magnolia Mother symbolizes new beginnings, strength, and dependability. She’s one of the first trees to bloom every spring here in Oregon. We have a special 2 acre magnolia park nearby that was created by a highschool student. It’s just magic to walk the loop, sketching and reveling in the first feelings of spring after a long, dark winter.

Magnolia Mother is an intuitive painting. I began with the idea of a face, and brought my magnolia sketches to the painting studio, lit the candles, put on lovely music and set up a fresh canvas. I marked the stirrings of spring with a large swoosh of green, and joyfully layered paint until I felt a character start to form. Intuitive painting is active, but also a sense of holding back and letting the painting speak for herself. No judgement. Magnolia Mother and her companion quickly formed without prior planning. To the left is deep winter inside the magnolia tree, she sleeps and dreams until the slight increase in daylight and temperatures spark her into action. Her energy rises, she greets spring and all beings around her with a powerfully warm heart. Fresh leaves and flowers bud and form, up and over the arc of the season change, as well as the painting, joyfully ushering us into a fresh new spring.
